Which Crafts Make Sense, and WHY do the OTHERS make none?
This is a mixture of a PSA and a bit of a rant. So last night a friend was looking into getting some crafted armor for his summoner. I explained to him that I could easily HQ him some Vanyas for half the AH price, all I needed was Potash and some crystals and I'd do the rest. First we did the hat. No problem! 9 Potash, a little pricy, but its somewhat within reason of the darklight price...sort of.
A few hours later, he got some more and wanted the pants. "Sure thing!" I tell him. So I open my book and look up the recipe, and then cry. Now I'd seen this before with Jewelry and most of the Gryphonskin stuff, but the atrocity that I was now staring at dumbfounded me. Below I have constructed a table, outlining for the community plain as day, the madness of crafting reqs...and how many recipies aren't even practical to make. =(
Anything not listed below, costs x9 philo mats, or 1125 Philo tomes worth of ingrediants. This includes ALL the weapon recipies, which are better than the Titan weapons. This includes most of the cloth recipes and armorsmith recipes. For some reason...only the below recipes have their values horribly skewed, and it makes no sense at all. (Particularly Leatherworker, who can barely make any without breaking the bank / farming for days, and players won't want to pay the insane price for that single piece, as a result.)

On average, the darklight piece costs a fraction of this to buy, and - in the case of the Vanya pants, is less than 1/4th the cost (24.44% of the cost, actually). Here's the thing...these numbers, don't make sense. AT ALL. If everything costed the base 1125...I could accept that. At least it would be somewhat competitive. Quite a few crafts (namely goldsmith and leatherworker) get screwed pretty hard on their 2 stars, as the price to make them is...well impractical.
Granted, the price of 2 star base mats is steadily on the decline as less and less players need darklight, but the fact remains a bunch of the recipes in the game, cost an insane amount of tome mats (Vanya Pants, I'm look at you!) and I for one...would like to know why.
If you are considering crafted gear...just keep this in mind. It takes the SAME number Philo Tome mats to make...for example Darksteel iLvl 70 Armor / Legs (1125, and counts for BOTH slots) than it does to make the belt, all by itself. I'm baffled as to why, but...it does. Meanwhile the Darklight Belt is one of the cheapest pieces in the game. Same for the jewelry. The flip-flop logic over a few materia slots still baffles me. Even at 1125 per piece of jewelry, that's still over triple the Darklight price. I feel like this should be brought into the sunlight, discussed, and maybe a post started on the SE forums about it.
Its...borderline madness. =/
